Throughout India, ginger is used to treat headaches and colds. The ginger is usually eaten or applied directly onto the temples in a compress.

The essential oil is extracted by steam distillation from the ginger plant (referred to by many as ginger root) and is a popular oil in modern aromatherapy.

Uses of Ginger Essential Oil

Ginger essential oil is a warming oil, with a strong scented - spicy / woody aroma.

Ginger has many wonderful attributes including warming, antiseptic, analgesic, antispasmodic, aphrodisiac, tonic, laxative, carminative and stimulating properties.

Ginger essential oil has many uses and can be helpful for the following illnesses and ailments:

If you suffer from travel sickness, add a couple of drops of ginger essential oil to a handkerchief, and inhale the scent throughout the journey. This should calm your stomach and help you throughout your travels.

Ginger is well known for settling upset stomachs. To cure an upset stomach, you could try burning 4-5 drops of the essential oil in a diffuser or burner. (Drinking a can of ginger ale is also through to be helpful for stomach problems / nausea and some simply chew on a small piece of ginger root).

Ginger is a warming essential oil and can be used to cheer your moods. I find Ginger is particularly effective on wet and damp days. A couple of drops of ginger, along with citrus oil such as tangerine, can lift the mood and warm the body.

Ginger essential oil is also a good oil to use in massage oils and works well when used on sore muscles, aches or cramps. Mix about six drops of the essential oil with your chosen carrier / base oil, to create your own warming massage oil blend. Add other essential oils such as cinnamon or grapefruit to add some zing to the blend and then massage onto your sore muscles.

Ginger essential oil blends well with many essential oils, particularly those from the citrus family such as tangerine, lemon, lime and orange. It also blends well with peppermint, tea tree, eucalyptus, frankincense, ylang-ylang, neroli, rose, geranium, chamomile, cinnamon, nutmeg and sandalwood essential oils.
