Studies in psychology have shown that the scents from essential oils are capable of adjusting a person’s mood. Because the brain reacts to the stimulus of scents of infinitesimal levels, essentail oils can be used in very small amounts.

Essential oils have good healing properties which can help a large variety of ailments when used in the correct manner yet please remember when using essential oils that when used incorrectly they can be harmful. Even small amounts of oil can be harmful and build up a toxic level in your body which can be poisonous.

Massage

One of the best methods of using essential oils is by mixing them with base oils and using them in massage.

The essential oils have attractive perfumes which have a large influence on the mind. Used in massage the essential oils are also absorbed through the skin, thus a massage with essential oils can greatly enhance body and mind.

Aromatic Baths

One of the main methos of using essential oils is in the form of Aromatic Baths.

Aromatic baths are a good way of using essential oils, due to the fact that water can be very therapeutic on its own, yet mixed together with essential oils the effects are further enhanced.

Room Fresheners

Essential oils can also be used as room fresheners. This is done by warming the essential oils which causes them to evaporate and scent the room.

Using an oil burner, you can add any essential oil mixed with water, around about 3-4 drops should be sufficient. If you do not have a oil burner you can even do this by placing a saucer of hot water mixed with essential oils above a radiator.

Lamp bulb rings can also be used to freshen your room, these are used by placing the ring around the neck of a light bulb with a slight amount of essential oil added to the ring. As the bulb heats up the scent will be released.

Essential Oils can also be added to your average houseplant spray bottle, add around 10 drops to every half litre of water and shake well to make a lovely air freshener.

Steam Inhalation

Add a few drops of essential oils into a bowl of very hot water, cover your head with a towel, bend over the bowl and inhale deeply for several minutes. This method os steam inhalation will open the pores and let the oil enter into the skin.

This can help you in many different ways depending upon the oils you are using, for example with lavender added it fights bacteria and can be useful in beating of cold and flu symptoms.

Steam Inhalation can also be used as a good way of enjoying a facial to deep cleanse, moisturise or brighten a dull complexion.

Hot or Cold Compresses

Essential oils can also be used in the form of hot or cold compresses.

To prepare a Hot Compress, fill a bowl with very hot water, add 4 to 5 drops of essential oil and then dip a folded piece of cloth into the water. Wring out the cloth and then place the moistened cloth onto the affected area until it reaches body temperature.

Creams and Lotions

Essential oils can also be used as a good form of beauty treatment. Essential oils make great face masks and can even be used for spot treatment.

Sedatives

You can use certain Essential Oils to aid you in getting to sleep. A few drops of essential oil on a pillow or on a tissue can be very effective for sleep problems.

Pot Pourri

Essential oils can also be used to make your own pot pourri or to revitalise your existing pot pourri.

To make your own pot pourri you can dry out leaves, flowers, herbs, grasses and seed pods, then place in a bowl. For a bowl of around six cups you should add around two tablespoons of talcum powder and 12 drops of essential oils. Then cover and leave for a couple of weeks shaking every now and again so that the oils are absorbed by the talcum powder.

To freshen your own pot pourri you should add 8 drops of essential oil to the mix, cover and occasionally toss and stir until the essential oil is absorbed.
