Suggested Uses of Citronella Essential Oil

Citronella is most widely know for its insect repellent properties and is excellent oil to burn at your summer barbecues. Burn 5-6 drops of the essential oil in an oil burner or diffuser in the garden, to keep those pesky bugs at bay. Mix with Cedarwood oil to create a wonderfully aromatic insect repellent. Citronella candles can also be bought for this purpose.

If the bugs do bite, add a couple drops of Citronella (diluted in a base / carrier oil) to a cotton wool ball and dab onto the affected area. This will sooth the itchiness of the bite.

Warming massage oils can be made from Citronella. Simply add the oil to your select base or carrier oil and massage onto the body, for a warming and uplifting massage. This massage will also prove beneficial for aching muscles. Try adding another oil of your choice to improve the aroma.

Citronella has excellent antiseptic properties which make it suitable for natural home cleaning products. Mix Citronella and Lemon essential oil with water or add to a pump action spray. Then use to wipe down bathrooms and kitchen work surfaces.

Citronella oil can focus and clear the mind. Try burning a few drops in an oil burner or diffuser, when you need to focus. If you find you do not like the scent of Citronella on its own, try combining with other essential oils such as geranium or rose, which may make the scent more appealing.

Citronella is a popular ingredient in aromatherapy candles. If you make your own candles, add Citronella to make effective insect repellent candles. Mix with Lavender, Peppermint or Eucalyptus to alter the scent.

Citronella blends well with most other essential oils, particularly Cedarwood, Geranium, Rose, Orange, Lemon, Bergamot, Lavender, Pine, Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Tea tree, Ylang Ylang and Rosemary essential oils.

Warning: always use well diluted. Avoid in pregnancy.
