Pepper is not only available in the black variety; white pepper is also very popular around the world and surprisingly both varieties are from the same plant. Black Pepper is from the unripe berries of the Piper Nigrum plant (or pepper plant as it is commonly known) and white pepper is from the ripe berries of the same plant.

The plants are now grown throughout the world, with Vietnam, India, Indonesia and China amongst the largest producers of the spice.

As well as being a popular spice in cooking, pepper has also been used for its medicinal values by many different cultures, especially in countries such as India and China, where its history in medicine can be traced back hundreds of years.

Black Pepper essential oil is extracted by steam distillation from the black peppercorns.
