Bergamot is from the citrus family and is extracted from the peel of the fruit. The fruits look like small green / yellow oranges and have a slightly bitter taste.
Christopher Columbus is believed to have discovered the tree in the Canary Islands and introduced the tree to Spain and Italy where it is still grown today. The bergamot orange is also found in Sicily, Morocco and some parts of Africa.
The bergamot orange takes it name from the Italian town of Bergamo, where the oil was first produced for sale.

Bergamot also has great de-odorizing properties, which makes it a good oil to use in a diffuser or oil burner to disperse unwanted odors.
