Basil is a very popular plant, probably due to its culinary uses and the ease of which it grows. It can be found growing on windowsills up and down the country and makes a wonderful addition to any herb garden.

Basil is a very popular cooking ingredient around the world, especially in the Mediterranean regions, where it can be found. The Italians are well known for their use of Basil and it is a popular ingredient in many dishes from Italy including soups, pasta and pesto.

As well as being a popular ingredient in the food world, Basil has many other uses across the world. It is used extensively in Chinese medicines and also by many other races in their religious / spiritual ceremonies.


Uses of Basil Essential Oil

Basil essential oil is a refreshing oil, with a sweet, spicy / herby scent which has liquorice like undertones.

Basil has many wonderful attributes including uplifting, clarifying, aphrodisiac, antidepressant, insecticide, stimulating, tonic, anti-inflammatory and energizing properties.

Basil is also well known for clearing and focusing the mind and giving clarity of thought. It can also be helpful with concentration.

Basil essential oil is also a versatile oil which can treat a wide range of illnesses and ailments including:

Suggested Uses

Basil is widely used as a natural insect repellent. To keep away flies or other insects, burn 4-5 drops of Basil essential oil in an oil burner or diffuser. Basil essential oil is also effective as an insect repellent when used on the skin; dilute in a carrier / base oil and apply to the skin.

Basil also sooths insect bites and stings; dilute in a carrier / base oil and apply to the skin.

Basil is also an excellent oil to aid concentration and to focus / clear the mind. If you are studying for exams or concentrating on an important piece of work, try diffusing some Basil essential oil in a diffuser or oil burner. The aroma will give clear the mind and give you the strength to continue successfully.

A couple of drops of Basil essential oil on a tissue will also clear the head; the perfect solution to calm and focus during that important exam.

The aroma from Bail essential oil is also very uplifting. Try adding three to four drops of Basil, along with three drops of Lavender essential oil to a warm bath, to lift the spirit.

Basil essential oil blends well with most essential oils, particularly lavender, lemon, eucalyptus, peppermint, bergamot, ginger, geranium, black pepper, pine, tea tree, thyme, rosemary, marjoram and neroli essential oils.
