Base Oils for Massage

When using Essential Oils for massage, a base oil (also known as carrier oils) needs to be used. There are many different base oils available, many of which are suitable for use in your own massage oils.

A good guide for mixing massage oils is usually to dilute the essential oils to around three to five percent of the base oil (carrier oil). The reason for this is that essential oils are far too strong and powerful to use directly on the skin, and base oils also provide much better lubrication for application onto the skin.

The majority of base oils are mainly selected for their lubrication abilities, yet some do contain therapeutic capabilities of their own. These oils can be mixed together with essential oils to compliment one and other.

The most popular base oils used in aromatherapy are Grapeseed Base Oil and Sweet Almond Base Oil. Grapeseed oil is a light oil, which is easily absorbed and non-greasy, which makes it an ideal oil for therapeutic massage. Sweet Almond oil is rich in vitamins and is also a great oil for general therapeutic massage.

Other base oils do have individual advantages such as Wheatgerm which is particularly rich in vitamin E. Wheatgerm Base Oil can be used with essential oils to help to reduce scar tissue after accidents or operations. Wheatgerm is also a natural antioxidant which can help prevent other oils from going off. By using roughly ten percent Wheatgerm you can add between one to two months life to your mixes. Wheatgerm however is not a particular good oil for use in massage as it is a sticky oil, so when using this oil for massage, it is better to mix it at a ratio of about twenty-five percent Wheatgerm to seventy-five percent of another base oil such as Sweet Almond Base Oil.

Apricot, Peach and Avocado Base Oils are particularly good oil for their nourishing and rich properties which can prove good in helping dry and ageing skin.

Some Carrier / Base oils are prone to going off once exposed to the air, so when using with essential oils it recommended that you should only mix as much of the oils as is necessary for each treatment.
