Aromatherapy skin care
We all want good skin and spend hundreds of pounds every year on skin care products. Many of these products are expensive, contain ingredients we know nothing about and don’t always have the results that we would expect, so why do we continue to use them?
We use them because they are readily available, they are widely advertised on television and in the magazines we read and they promise to make us more beautiful.

Are there any alternatives to these products? I hear you asking.
The answer is yes.
Women (and some men) throughout history have relied on the power of nature for their skin care products and we can still use natural products today for our skin care routines.
The food we eat and drink is one important way we can improve our skin without relying on any skin care products. Are you drinking enough water? If we want good skin on the outside we have to look after our bodies on the inside and drinking plenty of water will promote healthy skin.
Our skin also needs a wide variety of vitamins to look and feel it best. Vitamins A, E, F, B Complex and K have all been shown to protect and improve the appearance of the skin. There are also many other minerals in fresh fruit, meat and vegetables that will help, so it is important to have a well balanced and nutritional diet.
A regular exercise routine and protecting your skin from the sun will also prove highly beneficial to your skin and appearance.
As well as eating healthily and exercise, you can also create your own skin care products using aromatherapy. The aromatherapy skin care products you create will be natural and you will know exactly what you are putting on your skin. They are also incredible easy to make and some examples are shown below:
How can aromatherapy help?
Essential oils have many healing properties which are beneficial to the skin, many of which have been used throughout history in skin care routines. There are many essential oils that can be used on different skin type, some examples of beneficial essential oils are shown below:
Normal Skin: Clary Sage, Geranium, Lavender, Neroli, Rose, Sandalwood and Rosewood essential oil
Oily Skin: Bergamot, Clary Sage, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Lemon, Peppermint, Rose, Rosemary, Tea Tree, Rosewood and Cedarwwod essential oil
Dry/Sensitive Skin: Chamomile, Patchouli, Frankincense, Lavender, Neroli, Rosewood, Rose and Sandalwood essential oil
Acne: Chamomile, Clary Sage, Lavender,
Lemon, Neroli, Rose, Tea Tree and Rosewood essential oil
Mature Skin: Clary Sage, Frankincense, Jasmine, Lavender, Neroli, Rose, Sandalwood, Carrot seed, Rosewood, Patchouli, Myrrh and Spikenard essential oil
Wrinkle / Fine Lines: Frankincense, Myrrh, Neroli, Patchouli and Rose essential oil
For face creams and lotions simply mix 2-5 drops of your selected oils, with about ¼ ounce (10g) of lotion or crème base. (When using your aromatherapy skin care product for the first time, apply a tiny amount of the product onto a small area of skin, such as you arm to ensure that you have no adverse reactions to the product).
You can also make your own face masks using your favourite essential oils. One of my favourites is 1 drop of orange essential oil, with 1 teaspoon of plain yogurt. This is applied to the face (avoiding the eyes) for ten minutes before rinsing.
As well as face creams and lotions, aromatherapy soaps can also have great effects on the skin. Making aromatherapy soaps are incredible easy and rewarding and you can choose the right oils for your skin type, so the soap will be tailored exactly to you.
Bathing in essential oils is also a great way to improve your skin. Choose your own aromatherapy oils to suit your own skin type and use one of our suggested recipes below:
Moisturising Bath Soak: 2 drops of jasmine, 4 drops of rose and 4 drops of chamomile essential oil.
Skin soothing Bath: 5 drops of chamomile and 5 drops of lavender essential oil.
There are also many aromatherapy massage oils which are highly beneficial to the skin:
Dry Skin Massage: 2 drops of neroli and 3 drops of rose essential oil in 30ml of apriot kernel base oil.
Cellulite massage oil: 4 drops of lemon, 4 drops of rosemary and 9 drops of geranium essential oil in 60ml of sweet almond base oil.
