How can aromatherapy help?

Aromatherapy has become increasing popular in the treatment of stress and is often recommended by many doctors and health care professionals as an alternative treatment to stress related problems.

There are many essential oils in the world of aromatherapy that can help stress, these include:

  • Lavender (relaxing / calming / good for insomnia)
  • Ylang Ylang (reduces stress / good for insomnia / warming)
  • Rosemary (stimulates)
  • Geranium (reduces stress)
  • Chamomile (reduces stress / helps with sleep)
  • Clary sage (relaxing)
  • Sandalwood (good for insomnia / depression)
  • Juniperberry (reduces anxiety)
  • Marjoram (reduces anxiety)
  • Chamomile (helps with sleep / stress)
  • Rose (relaxing / warming)

Other essential oils will help due to their stimulating and uplifting properties:

  • Peppermint (improve clarity of mind / refreshing)
  • Grapefruit (improve optimism / feelings of happiness)
  • Tangerine (improve optimism / feelings of happiness)

These essential oils can be used in many ways and everyone has there own favourite way of using the oils. Below I have listed some aromatherapy techniques to try, but I am sure that you will modify these to suit your own needs as you become more adept in the world of aromatherapy.

1. If you are having trouble sleeping, try an aromatherapy bath. A few drops of chamomile or lavender essential oil should help you to sleep better and wake up refreshed and ready to take on the world.

2. Diffuse grapefruit or tangerine essential oils in an oil burner. The sweet smelling citrus scents will instantly uplift your moods.

3. Try a few drops of essential oil on a handkerchief, to use during your working day. If you have a long day ahead of ahead of you, try something stimulating and refreshing such as peppermint or one of the citrus essential oils.

4. Take a relaxing bath and listen to your favourite music. A mixture of lavender, rosemary and clary sage essential oil is one of my favourites.

5. Place a few drops of essential oil on a cotton wool ball and leave by a hot radiator. Choose an oil to reflect you mood, i.e. to relax choose lavender or clary sage; to lift your mood select grapefruit, tangerine or lemon essential oils.

6. Create your own relaxing aromatherapy massage oil and get your partner to give you a relaxing massage. We also have some pre-blended aromatherapy massage oils available to buy.

There are many other ways of using aromatherapy to help with stress related problems, but we recommend that you try some of the essential oils and aromatherapy methods listed above and find the ones most suitable to you and your lifestyle.
