A good night sleep is essential to us all and without it we cannot perform to our full potential. Lack of sleep can make you grumpy, lose concentration and in severe cases can make you feel ill.
A lack of sleep can also be very dangerous if you are using machinery or driving. Many people will have experienced the fear and shock from nodding off for just a second whilst at the wheel. You will also have read about the many catastrophes that have happened due to a driver falling asleep at the wheel.
Sleep is very important to us all and it is recommended that we get between 7 to 8 hours of sleep per day. For many of us this is not a problem, but for others sleeping for any length of time can be a big issue in their lives.
Sleep disorders and insomnia are commonplace and if you are one of the unlucky people who suffer problems with sleeping / insomnia, you will know that this is not a nice affliction. Thankfully there are small changes that can be made to your lifestyle which may help.
How Can Aromatherapy Help?
There are many essential oils in the world of aromatherapy that can help with your sleep problems. Many essential oils are also well suited to dealing with stress and stress-related conditions which can be a major factor in sleep problems. This makes aromatherapy an excellent way to deal with your sleep problems and their causes.
There are many essential oils which have a sedative effect on the body. This makes them excellent oils to use for sleep problems. Essential oils with sedative properties include:
If your sleep problems are brought about by stress or anxiety, the following essential oils could help to calm, relax and relieve the stress, thus helping you to sleep better.
Some suggested uses for the above essential oils are shown below:
1. Try dropping a couple of drops of lavender essential oil onto your pillow or bed sheets. You could also drop the essential oil onto a cotton wool ball and leave on your bedside table; if you do not want to drop the oil directly onto your bed linen.
2. Take a bath before bedtime, combining your favourite selection of oils from the ones listed above. My favourite combination would be 3 drops of Lavender, 3 drops of Chamomile and 2 drops of Jasmine essential oil
3. Get you partner to gently massage you with a relaxing massage oil. Blend 7 drops of lavender and 4 drops of rose essential oil in 60ml of grapeseed base oil.
(Do not have the massage too close to bedtime, as this may stimulate you too much and prevent sleep. An hour or 2 before bed should be enough to relax and de-stress you for the night.)
We also sell a 50ml bottle of Lavender sleep massage oil which you may find helpful.
4. Diffuse one or more of the above essential oils in an oil burner, diffuser or lamp ring in your bedroom, just before bedtime. The scent from the oils will linger and help you to drift off to sleep.
5. Create an aromatherapy mist spray using your favourite essential oils from our selection above. Simply mix your chosen essential oils with water in a pump action mist sprayer (the ones that you can buy for plants work well). You can then spray the air or your bed sheets with the aromatherapy spray before bedtime
There are many other ways of using aromatherapy to help with sleep problems, but we recommend that you try some of the essential oils and aromatherapy methods listed above and find the ones most suitable to you and your lifestyle.
